Main Bazaar

Adjacent to the Kuching Waterfront, the Main Bazaar is the oldest street in the city of Kuching.  It has some excellent examples of Chinese shop house architecture, which is occupied by the same family for generations. Kuching’s highest concentration of handicraft and antique shops are found here. The whole area radiates character and fascination.  For enthusiasts of heritage buildings, there is a row of seamlessly conserved 19th century Chinese houses at the nearby Upper China Street.

Tun Jugah Textile Museum and Gallery

Textile enthusiast interested in a more hands on look at textiles ought not to miss the Tun Jugah Museum at Tun Jugah Tower. Located at the 4TH floor, it is run by the private Tun Jugah Foundation which houses an outstanding collection of Iban Pua Kumbu textile and exquisite Iban silverware and jewelries.

Chinese History Museum

Situated on the Kuching Waterfront Opposite the Tua Pek Kong Temple, the Chinese History Museum traces the history of the Chinese community in Sarawak. It is the one attraction that should not be missed when travelling Kuching. Opened in 1993, the museum is a place where travelers can learn more about the Chinese culture in Sarawak.

Fort Margherita

The fort was built in 1879 to guard Kuching’s river banks from bandits. In the past, a canon shot was fired from the fort every evening to mark the end of the administration work day. It was named after Charles Brooke’s wife, Ranee Margaret, a unique landmark along the Sarawak River. Travelers can take a Penambang water taxi to Fort Margherita from numerous waterfront jetties on the south bank.
